Krakow is one of the oldest cities in Poland. Walking along its streets, you can feel the medieval atmosphere. You will probably be wondering what the city looked like, and how people lived centuries ago. Of course it is impossible to go back in time, but in Krakow it is not so obvious. Here you can take a tour that will move you back in time to the Middle Ages. And all you need to do is go below the surface of the Main Market Square. Quite unusual, but as simple as that.

 

In Krakow there is a unique, and most probably the only such museum in Europe, that is situated in the underground, about 5 meters below the market square surface. Archeological excavations that started in 2005 and took nearly 5 years allowed to uncover unusual findings and thus establish the museum. The effect – the medieval times within your reach. Here you will learn that medieval people didn`t use forks, fishing was important for religious purposes and that you could lose your teeth if you ate meat during fasting days... You will see combs that were used to remove insects from hair or spoons used for cleaning ears. Authentic medieval cobbled streets and wooden water pipes were also excavated.

 

You will also learn that Krakow was one of the most important trade centers in central Europe at the time and that all roads led not only to Rome… You will also find out what goods were shipped via Krakow and how this process looked. Surely you will be surprised to see a settlement burning in the exhibition. Remnants of the 13th century wooden huts are there too. During the visit you will also see the 11th century cemetery (that covered the whole area of the Market Square) and will learn about some anti-wampire practices.
