The Royal Route
The most popular and the most beautiful historical sites of Krakow. The tour starts at Plac Matejki (Matejko Square), and leads through Brama Floriańska (Floriańska Gate) and Rynek Główny (the Main Market Square), up to Wzgórze Wawelskie (the Wawel Hill). During the walk you will have a chance to admire many beautiful tenement houses. You will also learn about their interesting history along the way. In the centre of the city you will see the Main Market Square, one of the three biggest ones in Europe. Next to the Main Market Square there is St. Mary’s Basilica with the greatest Gothic altarpiece in Europe, a marvellous work of art by Wit Stwosz (Veit Stoss). You will also hear the Hejnał, a bugle call that is played every hour from the higher church tower. We will then follow on our route to see the Jagiellonian University, the Bishop’s Palace and the famous papal window, as well as the Church of St. Francis of Assisi with its beautiful stained glass windows made by Stanisław Wyspiański. We will continue our walk along ul. Grodzka (Grodzka St.) and then the most beautiful and the oldest Krakow’s street, ul. Kanonicza, that leads to the Wawel Hill. On top of the hill there is the Wawel Castle, one of the most magnificent Renaissance royal residences in Europe, and the Wawel Cathedral, which is also the main burial site for Polish monarchs and national heroes.
